The people who have brought you the Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival for 10 years teams up once again with AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center to launch the Washington, DC Fantastic Film Showcase, a four-night event which will take place June 2-5 at the historic AFI Silver Theatre. Fifteen films representing the best in genre cinema – fantasy, sci-fi, action, animation, dark comedy, and horror – will be screened.
Click here for the full schedule! Opening the festival will be HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE, New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi’s rollicking follow-up to WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, followed by French filmmaker Lucile Hadžihalilović's visionary EVOLUTION, her first film in over a decade. |

Additional highlights include the "Cronenberg-style body horror" ANTIBIRTH, produced by and starring Natasha Lyonne, and directed by Danny Perez, who previously directed the Animal Collective "visual album" ODDSAC; Sundance sensation UNDER THE SHADOW, where a young Tehran mother confronts an ancient evil awoken during the Iran-Iraq war; the '70s-set desert thriller, CARNAGE PARK, set somewhere between Wes Craven's THE HILLS HAVE EYES and Peter Watkins' PUNISHMENT PARK; Zach Clark (WHITE REINDEER) off-kilter tale of an ex-Goth nun, LITTLE SISTER, which recently premiered at SXSW; sci-fi romance EQUALS, starring Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult, directed by AFI Conservatory alum Drake Doremus (LIKE CRAZY); Osgood Perkins' boarding school chiller THE BLACKCOAT'S DAUGHTER (aka FEBRUARY); and the wacky dark comedy THE GREASY STRANGLER, produced by Elijah Wood.
Classic films presented include a 50th anniversary presentation of BATMAN: THE MOVIE starring Adam West and Burt Ward; a new restoration of the 1954 color sci-fi GOG in 3D, presented by 3D expert Robert Furmanek; and the restored version of the rare and transgressive 1973 Japanese animation classic BELLADONNA OF SADNESS [KANASHIMI NO BERADONNA].
The Fantastic Film Showcase will also feature a special screening of Brian De Palma's PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, introduced by Washington, DC-area television legend, Count Gore De Vol. The screening will feature a musical pre-show and concurrent shadowcast by the DC All-Star troupe that recently wowed the AFI Silver audience at last year's screening of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW.
The inaugural Washington, DC Fantastic Film Showcase will conclude with two world premieres of films produced in the Mid-Atlantic region: the documentary TREKOFF: THE MOVIE, directed by and starring Justin Timpane (NINJAS VS. MONSTERS); and Jay Spence's modern love letter to grindhouse filmmaking, YOU'RE F@#K'N DEAD!
